People who think this is appalling will shake their heads in sadness and grief; people who think it's just fine will cheer. It is heartbreaking to see our country backtrack to an era we hoped was behind us, but hatred endures, doesn't it? So sad. I’m sickened by all of this, though, unfortunately, I am not shocked. Just think of what all we've been through since George W Bush stole both elections. I really hope the best comes out of this and everyone involved in the judging of this don't use their personal feelings towards this. I'm white. My father had an excellent, leadership job with the hospital. I attended church. I sang in choirs. I played in the band. I was a boy scout, but I broke rules too. I was also an outcast among my peers--even though my family had blood and marriage roots in the community dating back 150 years. Still, as a man now in his forties, I had thoughts of one day returning. I had thoughts of going back to Jena's tall pine trees and easy pace, its rolling hills and the architectural history of a small town, a Mayberry. I dreamed of wandering the woods and streams with my children, as I had done. I remembered there had been some racism. But it was honest. It wasn't backstabbing racism, strouded in normalcy, as is often found in the North. It wasn't, as the BBC called it, "stealth racism." It was inappropriate jokes and ethnic stupidity, which anyone with a brain quickly saw for ignorance and disregarded. It was limited to the mouths of red necks, goat ropers, oil field workers and the elderly. The town leaders saw passed color. I attend a college in Los Angeles whose focus is heavily on Social Justice so I realize the effects of race on us. I love to read things that white people write and or say that try and soften these situations as "not so bad" "or "the racism where i live is very honest" excuse the french but what the hell does that mean? Racism is unacceptable and should not be tolerated in any form. I grew up on the westcoast that is not as effected by the slave trade that took place in the south, but I know it still exhists. The biggest travesty is that we allow the biggots and racists to run our political system. Everytime these things happen we need to remove the bad seeds from political offices that they never should have held!! In a country that is to be equal, isn't it funny that when a white boy commits an act of racism (or any crime) it's always some form of justification brought to light in their defense. But when a Black man does the same thing, it's considered an outright punishable crime. The white boys instigated and caused a crime, their action was minimalized, but when the young Black men reacted in self defense it's a crime. It has been proven throughout history that when a white man attacks a Black man for whatever reason, his defense is always "self defense" and if he is convicted the sentence is usually a fourth of what a Black man would serve. A white man will instigate a fight, wait for a reaction, then blame those for reacting to what he has caused. Then he will harp on and lie about those who react in order to take the spot light off of what he has caused. And when Black people protest, they are the ones who have a problem. White people constantly talk about Black people always want things given to them. I see all the things that white people have, and it was not only taken from Black people, they have robbed, stripped, raped and infected every ethnic group around the world. Think about it. WHAT?!) one must look at it from a legal stand point and not take things out of context.This was about ONE incident not a group of incidents.These kids were wrong for beating the boy up...plain and simple.BUT Louisiana is known to have one of the most corrupt governments in the US and the way this case was handled, from a legal standpoint, was absolutely wrong and absolutely biased!I don't, however, agree with letting these kids off totally.What they did was wrong and the actions of others should not have any bearing whatsoever on how they are tried.And as for the nooses that were hung on the tree, if indeed it was meant as a threat to the Black kids in the school then I say charge the ones who did the hanging with a Federal hate crime and put their butts in jail.As far as the sentencing of the White kid who got probation for beating up the Black kid...check the sentencing statutes for this kind of charge, I'll bet he got the least amount of time he could according to sentencing laws.And innocence is not realitive...either you are or you are not.If you beat someone up and put them in the hospital you should be punished for it. Having said that, I think charging this kid with Attempted 2nd Degree Murder is utterly ridiculous (unless of course he meant to kill him) and the court should recuse itself and the trial should be moved to another venue.
